Geological Trip to Nahan
General
Geological Field Work in Nahan to Kala Amb area of Himachal Pradesh (Toposheet
no. 53F/2, 53F/3, 53F/6 and 53F/7) was taken up during field trip season 2015-16 (Dated 22-12-
15 to 25-12-15). Study area (N30o40’- 30o30’ – E77o10’- 77o20’) a town in Himachal Pradesh in
India and is the headquarters of Sirmaur District. It is located within Zone -IV of the Seismic
Zoning Map of India having high potential to earthquake hazard.
This field trip has its own importance, as no one can understand Geology in whole without
visualising it and a field trip in a geologically active area is the best place to visualising all the
concepts which we havelearned inside the four walls of the classroom. In the field season 2014-
15, we worked in Mussoorie (Dehradun) area. So the main objectives of the trip was (1. To
recapitulate all the knowledge which we have learned from last year’s field trip as well as from
classroom study.
2. To learn about how to explore for the field areas with the help of Toposheets, GPS & recent
reports. 3. How to locate ourselves as well as the exposures on the toposheets etc)
Location and Accessibility
The area we studied during field season 2015-16, falls in Sirmaur district of
Himachal Pradesh and Lies between 30o27’ – 30o35’ latitudes and 77o10’ – 77o20’longitudes in
parts of toposheets no. 53F/2, 53F/3, 53F/6 and 53F/7.
